Leading and inspiring a new generation of acupuncturists
Dr. Sonia F. Tan, BA, BA(H), DTCM Dip, DAOM, RAc, RTCMP, is a second-generation Chinese Metaphysician, following in the footsteps of her grandfather, the late Woon-Yew Tan.
Sonia is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, a Registered Acupuncturist and Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner. Licensed since 2006, she is also trained in Chinese Face Reading and is a certified practitioner of Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology under Chinese metaphysics Master Marlyna Los.
Sonia is one of a small group of Certified Gold Level practitioners of Balance Method Acupuncture under the late Grandmaster Dr. Richard Teh-fu Tan. His most advanced level courses after all Balance Method levels (Ba Zi), were first completed by a group of 16 senior students. Sonia was among those 16. Fellow senior students have given her their blessing to pass on the Balance Method Acupuncture legacy.
Sonia trained with and is certified under Dr. Richard Tehfu Tan as a Ba Zi Astrology Practitioner.
Sonia obtained her clinical research doctorate degree from Yo San University of TCM in Los Angeles, California, where she received the DAOM Distinction Award (for excellence in clinical research and clinical didactic work). This doctorate specialized in Integrative Medicine in Healthy Aging and Longevity and her research was on “A novel approach to treating Allergic Rhinitis and its efficacy results.”
A graduate of the five-year Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine program at the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Vancouver, Sonia interned at Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hefei, Anhui, China.
Sonia is pleased to be carrying on the dream, legacy and lineage of her late Shifu, Dr. Richard Tehfu Tan, in developing the first Balance System Acupuncture Certificate Program at an accredited public post-secondary institution. Launched in 2018 at Langara College, the program raised Balance Acupuncture medicine to higher levels of learning, competency and confidence for students.
Dr. Sonia F. Tan DAOM, RAc, RTCMP has been teaching since 2013. She has been a featured guest at various international speaking engagements and on numerous media shows.
She was a teaching faculty member for four years at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine and is also an adjunct instructor with the Academy of Acupuncture, in Advanced Chinese Astrology.
Sonia has studied a variety of martial arts and is grateful to her Shifu, the late Dale Johns, for her foundation, and to Shifu Matthew Dyck for continuing to guide her along this path.
Sonia was honoured to be a part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Medical Team as an On-Call Specialist (Registered Acupuncturist). She is the co-founder and past co-chair of the BC Sport Acupuncture Association.
